Explosion-proof signal towers

Motion29 has, over the last five years, built up a reputation as one of the country’s leading industrial safety-solutions experts. One of Motion29’s main suppliers is Japanese-based Patlite – world leaders in visual and audible signalling alarms.

The explosion-proof signal tower is probably Patlite’s most robust safety system to date.  This simple to use mechanism made of aluminium alloy comes in two variations, the EDLM and the EDWM, a three and five tiered coloured LED unit which instantly indicates safety and emergency hazards and changes in machinery status.

“Even at ambient temperatures, hydrocarbons handled in refineries may give rise to explosive atmospheres depending on their flashpoint”, says Motion29 Co-director, Andrew Wilkinson.    “It is therefore imperative to have a robust safety warning system in place which is resilient to extremely hazardous environments.  An efficient, hard-wearing signal tower can save lives and in conditions where en explosive incident is not beyond the realms of possibility, I would always recommend investing in a reputable brand who designs their equipment specifically for the job.”

Built to be reliable and durable under even severe refinery conditions, the EDLM and EDWM are encased in a pressure and flame-proof housing which is specifically designed to withstand potentially flammable and even explosive atmospheres.  They are also resilient to heavy volumes of water.

Applications are manifold and include oil refineries, gas treatment system for semiconductor production lines, steel mill plants where high pressure gas is used, welding lines which use explosive gas, gas detection systems, thermal power stations, chemical production lines and airbag production lines which use gun powder.

“One of my key recommendations to on site operations managers is to invest in good quality equipment which is simple to install, cost-effective to maintain and easy to interpret” continues Andrew.  “When you’re faced with a potentially fatal situation you don’t want to have to get out your instruction manual to work out what the system is trying to tell you.  It needs to be an uncomplicated case of ‘green light means x, red light means y’ and so on.  That way all personnel know instantly what the problem is and the matter can be resolved rapidly.”

Compliant to ATEX and NEC standards, the explosion-proof signal towers allow for easy wiring for parallel connections to another interlocking device through two lead-in ports.  Various fitting options are available to suit all applications such as wall, flush and horizontal mount.

Access to the signal tower mechanisms is easy via the opening of the bottom cover.  However, once in place they should rarely need to be removed due to their maintenance-free 100,000 hour life LEDs which provide unsurpassed brightness from a wide range of angles.

“The major benefit of the Patlite signal towers” comments Andrew “is that one signal unit circumvents the need to have separate lights for communicating different conditions, as one stand-alone unit does it all.  A signal tower is a cost-effective necessity to all industrial environments where oil and gas are present.  A well-made unit will not only be a life-saver but will also eliminate downtime and increase overall productivity.”
